SportsLeader Spotlight
This project began in 2007 after hearing the constant negativity on sports talk radio regarding athletes (ie- steroids, drugs, big egos, etc) – I'd had enough! One day I had a conversation with Leo Brown, GM of 1380am Realife Radio (most in Lexington still know Leo by his old radio name “Freakdaddy” when on Z-103FM) Well, I told Leo of my frustrations and inspired by the EWTN show “Life on the Rock” and the great apostolate of SportsLeader, I decided to put together a radio segment showcasing superior athletes that had great character and beliefs. Leo was very encouraging and provided the production equipment and editing to make this project work.
The “raw” interviews usually last between 10-20 minutes. The drawback is because of station breaks and national feeds, my segment can only last 2 minutes. Not 2:02 or 1:58 but two minutes exactly! Editing down to 2 minutes is extremely difficult when people have so many great things to say, but I did the best I could while keeping the integrity of the piece intact. I am very proud to say from it's humble beginnings on 1380am in Lexington we are now broadcast on 28 stations in 8 states thanks to securing a title sponsor. I guess people still want to be inspired and hear of good things athletes do.
